Betrayal trauma refers to a significant betrayal(s) by a loved one upon whom the victim trusts and depends on for safety. The discovery of sexual infidelity, pornography addiction, or financial deception by a partner is not just a breach of trust in the relationship but a fundamental shift of reality, safety, and self.
For many partners, the wound of sexual betrayal is compounded by a financial betrayal that often occur together. The discovery of both simultaneously creates what is described as the exponential wound. Each betrayal is devastating on its own; together the financial betrayal can destabilize the victim(s) involved in ways that couples therapy does not address.
What betrayal trauma looks like
- Intrusive thoughts, flashbacks, and hypervigilance following discovery
- Difficulty trusting your own perceptions after being deceived
- Emotional dysregulation or collapse; cycling between numbness and overwhelm
- Physical symptoms including sleep disruption, appetite changes, and somatic distress
- Isolation and shame—feeling unable to tell anyone what happened
- Uncertainty about reality and whether to stay in or leave the relationship
Treatment approach
Betrayal trauma treatment with Debra begins with stabilization for emotional regulation and safety. Debra supports the betrayed partner to navigate each step through the crises, and the resulting emotional and psychological disorientation. The crisis caused by the deception of betrayal impact the brain similar to symptoms of a concussion. One is unable to think clearly about what happened and what comes next. Debra works together to address the trauma itself with EMDR and somatic-based approaches and rebuilding the client’s sense of self and agency. The structured support provides a frame for a structured therapeutic led disclosure (if requested) or next steps in decisions about the relationship or the rebuilding process.
Debra works with both the betrayed partner and the betraying partner. Both need support. Both deserve a path forward. Betrayal trauma treatment is integrated within Debra’s EMDR therapy approach for trauma and PTSD.
