Complex cases do not always arrive with clean presenting problems. A client disclosing financial infidelity may also be describing compulsive behavior, relationship trauma, and a years-long pattern of secrecy. A partner of a sex addict may present with what looks like an anxiety disorder but is living through betrayal trauma. These cases reward therapists who have seen the territory before.
Clinical consultation is an opportunity to gain additional perspective about difficult cases and to sharpen skills for case conceptualization, and transference/countertransference. It is professional development for licensed clinicians who want to work more effectively in this specialty.
